Now, I know this sounds like one of those strange Bible questions that people ask just to be funny, but did Adam and Eve have a belly button?

Now, medically speaking, what is a belly button? It is a scar left behind after the umbilical cord is cut and heals following birth. Now, before birth, a baby receives oxygen and nutrients through the umbilical cord. The cord serves as the baby’s lifeline in the womb. So, did Adam and Eve have belly buttons? Well, Christians have actually debated that question for years. There’s people who would say no, and they would argue Adam did not have a belly button because he was not born. Adam had no mother and therefore has no reason to have such a scar. Genesis 2:7 says, “Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.” Adam was not formed in the womb. He was formed from the dust. Therefore, there is no medical reason for him to have a belly button since he never actually had an umbilical cord. Some say yes, Adam did have a belly button. And they would argue that God created Adam as a mature man, which is clear from the scripture. He wasn’t created as a baby. They say that Adam was made just like the rest of creation in a mature state. God did not create Adam as a baby. Um he was made mature just like the rest of creation. When God created trees, he created it with fruit on it. Uh it didn’t have to grow to create fruit right in the beginning. And the universe is another example. Bible believing Christians do not believe that stars prove an old universe. All of these stars, planets, and galaxies, which are light years away, were created in that state by God. And therefore, that’s why it looks so far away. So, what’s the answer? Did Adam have a belly button? Well, we don’t know. And that’s because the Bible never tells us whether Adam had a belly button. And honestly, that’s a good reminder for us. The Bible does not answer every question we’re curious about. But it does answer every question we need to know for salvation. Sometimes people get stuck on speculative questions and miss the plain truths that God has revealed. The Bible is silent about Adam’s belly button. But the Bible is not silent about Adam’s sin. It’s not silent about Adam’s fall. And it’s not silent about the Savior who came to rescue Adam’s children. So what does the Bible teach about Adam? Adam was the first man. Adam sinned. And through Adam, sin and death entered the world. The Bible says in Romans 5:12, “Sin came into the world through one man and death through sin.” And that is why Adam matters. Adam was the head of the human race. And so when Adam fell, mankind fell in him. But the good news is that there is a second Adam. 1 Corinthians 15:45 says, “The first man became a living being. The last Adam became a lifegiving spirit. That last Adam is Jesus Christ. Where Adam failed, Jesus obeyed. Where Adam brought death, Jesus brings life. Where Adam brought condemnation, Jesus brings salvation. So, did Adam have a belly button? Maybe, maybe not. Uh, by the way, I’m on team no belly button for the record. But honestly, it doesn’t really matter. But here is something that we do know. Jesus had a belly button. Jesus was not created from the dust. Jesus was born of a woman. Yes, the eternal son of God truly became man. He entered the womb. He had a mother. He was born. He had a real human body. So even though Adam may not have had a belly button, Jesus did. And that matters because our savior did not merely appear to be human. He became truly human to save sinful humans. And the first Adam brought death. The last Adam came with a real body, lived a real life, died a real death, and rose again to give eternal life to all those who trust in him. So, the Bible may not answer whether or not Adam had this scar, which we call a belly button today. But we do know this. Adam gave us a far different scar, the scar of sin. But the second Adam gives us something far better. He gives us salvation. And that’s we’re thinking far more than just five good minutes.
